The animal is a branch, not a personality test
Each animal names one earthly branch. A branch carries polarity, a primary element, and hidden stems. It can appear in any of the four pillars, so its position changes the part of life it helps describe. The stem above it changes the expression again. A Wood Dragon and a Fire Dragon share a branch, not a complete nature.

Why the element before the animal matters
Ten stems and twelve branches combine into a 60-part cycle. The animal branch returns every twelve years, but the complete stem-branch pair returns only after sixty. The element named before an animal belongs to the stem above it. It describes what is visible, while the branch describes the ground carrying it.
What to look for in your chart
Notice all the animals in your four pillars and where each one sits. Repetition can make one pattern easier to recognise. Opposing or harmonising branches matter only inside the whole chart. For a relationship, compare both complete charts before giving the two year animals too much authority.
